Review: LEGO Marvel Avengers

The LEGO video game franchise is known to add a very witty and cute twist to popular movies, comic book characters and you end up seeing them in a different light. I honestly feel like the guys at LEGO, Warner Bros. Games and Tt Games have a winning formula but can they pull off this winning formula with the Avengers.LEGO Marvel Avengers PlayStation 4 Cover

The Avengers movie franchise that’s well known for its epic battles between foes and in some cases, its epic battles between the super heroes, like the epic battle between The Hulk and Ironman that took place right here in Johannesburg. I must say that in that regard, the game has slightly disappointed me because some of the most epic battles in the Avengers series have been turned into a one button mash up and it would have been great to see a couple of combos created for those battles, so that you can relive those scenes with the same type of excitement you got, when you were watching the movie. Apart from the major battles that the Avengers are well known for, the overall gameplay that LEGO Marvel Avengers has to offer is good and there are instances where you get to pull off really cool moves with the characters. LEGO Marvel Avengers lets you take control of two or more characters at a time and you get to pull off really epic combos with the characters by simply pressing one button on your controller. My favourite two characters to play with were Captain America and Hawk Eye, they have a combo where Hawk Eye shoots multiple arrows at Captain America’s shield and the arrows bounce off the shield to takeout multiple targets.

LEGO Marvel Avengers Screenshot

LEGO Marvel Avengers gameplay is rich with depth as it features both storylines from the Avengers movie franchise and some cool bonus content from Marvel’s super hero franchise, resulting in hours on end of smashing, problem solving and building. The storyline is filled with really funny moments that have been beautifully integrated into the game. I wouldn’t have thought that Nick Fury, the big boss at Shield likes Strawberry milkshakes, one would think that he prefers his drinks a bit stronger. This is the type of humour you get while playing LEGO Marvel Avengers and its present throughout the game, from Ironman riding a nuclear missile like a rodeo, to Thor hitting The Hulk with a fish instead of his hammer; the games narrative is really funny. The games visuals also add to this and give the game that slap stick comedy feel, from Nick Fury using his Strawberry milkshake to deflect an arrow from Hawk Eye, to Black Widow telling The Hulk (Bruce Banner) that she came alone in order to gain his trust but S.H.I.E.L.D agents are falling out the ceiling and landing on top of each other, LEGO Marvel Avengers is a sure winner in the funny department.

LEGO Marvel Avengers Screenshot 2

LEGO Marvel Avengers takes the phrase “Hulk Smash” to the next level but the repetitive nature of this method of gameplay gets really tiring especially since the storyline in this game is longer than the average LEGO video game. The problem solving sections of the game are very simple and easy to get through and if you find yourself stuck, there’s always a hint nearby to help you out. Some of the puzzles you need to complete require you to look for missing items or help out one of the games many characters. There’s an instance where Black Widow is required to help the crew of the Helicarrier to prepare the runaway for Captain America’s immediate arrival, in order to do this Black Window needs to clean up an oil spill, help locate the signal flags and disable an alarm. It doesn’t sound like much hard work but considering who the games target audience is, it’s more than enough to keep the little ones busy. LEGO Marvel Avengers gets a 7/10 from me and its available on the PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, PS Vita and on the Xbox 360.

Review: Ride

The first thought that came to mind when I played Ride is that it felt like I was playing Grand Turismo or Forza Motorsport but instead of driving around in various cars, I had a wide range of motorbikes to choose from.

Ride Cover Art

The game features motorbikes from the likes of Suzuki, Ducati, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Triumph, totalling more than 114 bikes available to win or purchase with in-game credits. The bikes handle with ease and I must say that they are a joy to play with especially when it’s just you and the road. Ride’s artificial intelligence doesn’t come to the party during a race because you can simply overtake it when turning into a corner but they simply catch up with you during the straights making it harder to win a race. One would argue, why don’t you get a faster bike but I did and this kept happening on numerous occasions and I felt like maybe I need a car in order to win a race. With that said, winning a race in Ride requires you to concentrate from start to finish and if you find yourself in the lead of a race, a simple error like braking too late can cost you the lead of a race and catching up to the leader requires some serious skill. Controlling a motorbike is not an easy task, whether in a video game or in real life and on countless occasions I found myself crashing into a barrier or other riders but the game has a rewind feature that lets you correct the mistake that you’ve just made. This feature came in handy whenever I over cooked my turns and I didn’t hit the brakes on time.

Ride Screenshot

As you can tell, Ride is packed with stunning locations from around the world that are beautifully captured from the likes of Imola, Sugo, Donington, Road America, Magny Cours and Potrero de los Funes Circuit, they are all wonderfully recreated in Ride. Some of the locations look like they were given that an extra polish and seem a bit plastic, the trees look the ones you buy at a grocery store and the skyline doesn’t give you that breathe taking moment that you are looking for whenever you look at the sky. I feel like the games biggest draw card is the bikes and the technicality that comes with controlling them, from taking part in the Naked Bike Series where you can enjoy the “pleasure of riding without going over the top”, it’s like an introduction into the world of motorbikes. The further you progress in the game you can take part in more complex classes that don’t require you to complete the previous one in order to play it, you just need enough credits to buy a bike that fits in that class. This is a great way of finding out which motorbike you prefer racing, unlike going through tedious gameplay modes in order to progress in the game. I’ve tried playing Ride with all the rider assists off and boy did I become friends with the barriers. More experienced players will enjoy turning on the manual brakes, and the manual ‘tuck’ for minimising rider wind resistance on the straights, but if you are a novice like me I would suggest that you keep the rider assists on, so that the overall gameplay doesn’t become a frustrating experience.

Ride Screenshot 2

In terms of gameplay Ride doesn’t really offer much, don’t get me wrong, the games World Tour Event has a lot of depth and one could race for hours on end taking part in every motorbike event imaginable but this becomes a bit boring after a while. The Elite Trophy Events are there to give you that option of getting away from the monotonous gameplay but they require you to complete a couple of races from the World Tour Event in order to unlock them which leads them to pushing you back into the event that you are trying to take a break from. Ride offers you to the opportunity to start your own team by recruiting a couple of your friends as teammates and taking part in various races but if you don’t play online with friends, you can assemble a team using the games AI and earn a couple of credits for yourself while you are at it. All the bells and whistles that you would expect from a modern day racing simulator can be found in Ride, from customising your bikes, customising your character, to purchasing motorbikes from the world’s best manufactures, to short time trial races where you sharpen your skills as a rider. Ride is a good motorbike simulator that has mastered the art of riding a motorbike but it’s let down by repetitive gameplay that’s a bit monotonous. It gets a 5/10 from me and it available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PC and on the Xbox 360.

Review: Rise of The Tomb Raider

Rise of The Tomb Raider is set in the cold and dangerous Siberian outskirts and it manages to pit Lara Craft against each and everything element within the game. It’s the classic battle of man, well in this case, it’s woman against the world and the key to her survival, is her rising to the occasion.

Rise of The Tomb Raider Box Art

I found that Rise of The Tomb Raider managed to beautifully integrate ideas from other video games like it but instead of falling into the trap of making the main character invincible, the developers of the game Crystal Dynamics have made Lara Craft into video game character that has human like characteristics and reactions. Lara has the ability to perform huge leaps from one mountain top to the other just like fellow adventurer Nathan Drake, but unlike Drake who can’t put a foot wrong, Lara Craft is vulnerable to things like running out of breath while swimming and a cold breeze sends shivers down her spine. The site of Lara jumping from one cliff to the other is truly amazing and at times she barely makes it to the other side, leaving you mashing the X button on your controller so that she doesn’t fall off. The game features tons of these nervy moments and they’ll leave you sitting on the edge of your seat, while taking huge sighs of relief. Lara walks into Rise of The Tomb Raider a bit vulnerable at the start of the game but as you progress in the game, Lara earns skills points that can be used to acquire skills from her three different classes, which are hunting, brawling and survival. You can use these skill points to tailor Lara according to your style of play or you can simply try to master all three classes like I did.

Lara Craft is on a journey to find the Divine Source and it looks like she’s not the only one who is looking for this ancient artifact that promises eternal life. The journey for the Divine Source is very close to Lara heart because it is a journey that was started by her father before he died. Throughout the game Lara gets flashbacks of her father and it seems like she’s not over his death and finding the Divine Source will bring her closure. This all makes for an interesting journey that features really shocking twists in the storyline and they unfold right in front of your eyes in the form of cinematic cut scenes that have been beautifully integrated into the game. Instead of the gameplay completely stopping for the cut scene, it’s like you take a moment to view things from Lara’s perspective and once it’s all over, the game continues. These cinematic cut scenes also form part of the gameplay, there’s an instance where Lara needs to out run a helicopter while running on old train tracks that are on top of a mountain, this all makes for a great part of the game requiring Lara to run, jump, climb and perform gravity defying leaps in order to survive. In between all this fast paced action, there are really cool dramatic slowmo’s of Lara performing leaps and jumps that are out of this world, that leave you picking up your jaw from the floor as you are amazed by what she just did.

Rise of The Tomb Raider Screenshot 1

The Siberian wilderness also comes with its own challenges and rewards, on top of taking on enemy troops, Lara Craft takes on wild animals, snow storms, icy rivers and avalanches, making the journey to the Divine Source a very tough one. At the beginning of the game you are thrown into the deep end by taking on a bear while enemy troops patrol the surrounding area. The bear has decided to take refuge in a cave that Lara needs to explore in order to unlock a new part of the map but the key to taking the bear down is to draw it out of the cave and shoot it with arrows. An ordinary arrow won’t harm the bear and out running the bear in the snow will only get Lara killed, so you’ll need to collect mushrooms and use them to craft poison arrows in order to take down the bear. This mission unlocks a huge part of the overall gameplay that Rise of The Tomb Raider has to offer, as it requires you to constantly look for resources that you’ll need to use to craft items like poison arrows. I found that the twigs and mushrooms used for arrows were easy to find and that weapon parts were really hard to find. It’s a constant search for items but exploring caves and tombs is also a great way of unlocking skill points and upgrades for Lara. The game will hint whenever there’s a tomb or cave nearby and you can choose to explore it or you continue with the games main storyline. The tombs are worth exploring as they offer a break from taking on the elements that the game has pit against Lara and they are a great problem solving exercise. In their own right, the tombs offer some of the best puzzles I’ve ever played in an adventure video game and solving a puzzle gave me the feeling that I just accomplished something really great. There are a couple of tombs in each location and they offer hours of gameplay that’s worth checking out and they also reward you greatly.

Rise of The Tomb Raider Screenshot 2

Rise of The Tomb Raider’s features a beautiful environment that has a wide variety of things to do, from escaping avalanches, to swimming in underground rivers that test how long Lara can hold her breath, to taking on various animals like bears, Amur leopards and packs of wolves. The game also features various ways of earning skills points and completing side missions is a good way of gaining upgrades at a faster rate. The games main storyline will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and as you progress, Lara gains new abilities like learning how to craft molotov’s from glass bottles and using cans of shrapnel to create hand grenades, this makes her journey of finding the Divine Source an ever evolving one that’s also filled with endless possibilities. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a great video game that takes players on a memorable journey and it gets a 9/10 from me. It’s currently available on the Xbox One and Xbox 360, with the PS4 and PC versions of the game only coming in 2016.
